Art journal cover texture with gesso and finishing up this year long crash the stash

Today I finish up this journal by creating the back pages and covers. I always create a space at the back that I can recap the time spent in my journal. It has been almost 1 year to the day that I started it, I can believe it!

The cover with all the texture just makes me happy and the title “Use your wings” captures how I feel about my journey through it. Our journals are a sacred place where we, grow, learn and take risks. It’s the place where we use our wings and fly. If we can risk and fly in our journals where can we?

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 25 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul. I believe—no, I know—you are worthy of love, and I want to teach you to know that about yourself. Join me on this journey of art and inspiration!

Shawn, I just recently purchased a fine liner and I know you said that you use airbrush medium, water and fluid acrylic. Is there a particular ratio of each each? Equal parts?

It’s a bit of trial and error, I start with equal parts air brush and acrylic and just a touch of water, then adjust adding more paint or medium depending on how it flows. I wish there was more of an exact recipe. Have fun!
