Mixed media canvas “Butterflies in her hair by creative team member Checiegirl

Hi and welcome to another creative team post! I’m super excited and honored to be able to share what I’ve created with you all again.

I wanted to complete two canvases I had used the paint pour technique on, I chose the blue one for the video, that reminded me of a galaxy background.

To start off I used Shawn’s face stencil with a sponge and some paint just to place where I wanted her to be. Then I used the butterfly masks to trace onto different papers and sprayed through the butterfly stencil onto plain paper.

After cutting out all the butterflies I placed the butterfly masks around the canvas covered the face and sprayed the background. When that was dry I painted highlights and details on her face using silver paint. Afterward I splashed silver paint and spray inks onto the background.

I finished off the canvas by sticking down all the butterflies, redoing the stenciling with texture paste and a palette knife, adding highlights with my uniball signo pen and once the canvas was fully dry I covered the butterflies with two layers of gel medium to add some shine.

I had loads of fun creating on that canvas and I love how it turned out.

I hope you enjoy the video and find inspiration from it. I can’t wait to share what I create with you all soon.

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 25 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul. I believe—no, I know—you are worthy of love, and I want to teach you to know that about yourself. Join me on this journey of art and inspiration!
