“Amazing Grace
Traditionally, I’ve worked on canvas, in art journals, and random other substrates but haven’t worked a lot on wood panels. I always put some in my shopping cart when shopping online, but haven’t pulled the plug! Then, I saw this wood panel in the dollar section at Target and thought it would be perfect opportunity to create on a wood panel! I really liked the color or the wood, and knew if I collaged some papers on top, I could easily cover up the painted saying.
The next day I received Shawn’s new vintage crosses stencil in the mail, and the ideas began to churn. I had a vision of simple, layered crosses but didn’t know what else to put with them. So, I began pulling out some ephemera to collage on the wood panel when I ran across this old hymn book when the idea came to me of a simple sketched church with stained glass windows.
I really enjoyed creating on the wood panel! It made an excellent surface to stencil on and add lots of mixed media layers. I hope this inspires you to give a dollar store find a mixed media makeover.
