This is my last project here as part of the Shawn Petite Creative Team and I feel like I put my entire heart and soul into this piece.

I love silhouette stencils and wings so I reached for those but you know I love text and absolutely fell in love with the new Dictionary Page stencil so you’ll see a bit of that in this piece as well.

My daughter commented when I was done that you can’t see the pretty collage papers anymore. I want to explain why I collage and then cover it up. For me, as an artist, it’s a jumping-off point. It breaks the blank page that tries to mock and stifle me. It also provides me with a color palette. See…I kinda collect pretty pattern paper because it inspires me. I will see a pretty piece of paper and just fall in love with the colors, the patterns, and textures. That is especially true for this Moon Child collection. Laying down that first layer provides the creative flow that led me to the finished piece. I never know exactly how a piece will turn out when I sit down. I have an idea of what I want to do but the actual outcome is always a surprise. The process is what we as artists live and creative for. I am able to process my feelings and my struggles through paint, collage, journaling, doodling. This piece is one of the first things I’ve created in months that I am actually happy with. I think that is because I let myself go…I let myself succumb to the process without worrying (too) much about the end result. I know that when I allow myself those things, that is when I am most at peace with my artwork. I love the texture that the crazing collage medium provided. That was the first time I used it to collage and not just as a layer itself. I will definitely be doing that again. I love the way Gloss Sprays create quick and easy permanent backgrounds. The quote is one of my favorites…it’s something I’m working on (constantly) and maybe someday, one day, I will believe in it.

This past year has been an absolute dream to be on the Shawn Petite Creative team to share my love of all things mixed media. I couldn’t imagine a more supportive group than this one. I hope you were all inspired at some point with a post I shared. Be safe, stay creative, and be brave in this life. It’s the only one we’ve got. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Enjoy the Video!

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 25 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul. I believe—no, I know—you are worthy of love, and I want to teach you to know that about yourself. Join me on this journey of art and inspiration!
