I wanted to incorporate words and texture in a collage, and Shawn’s Dictionary Page Stencil, Scribble Flowers 1 Stencil, and Vintage Butterfly Collage Pak provided the inspiration and tools for a cohesive theme.

I used the Vintage Butterfly collage pak to create the initial layer on the panel, then added a layer of modeling paste with the Scribble Flower stencil to create more texture.  I used the Dictionary Page to stencil the beauty definition onto tissue paper with ink and applied it to the panel with Modge Podge.  I cut out one of the individual butterflies from the collage pak in a circle and use some acrylic paint and ink to make it resemble being seen through a magnifying glass.  Using some watered-down acrylic paint, I added some drips around the magnifying glass and created a vignette with some charcoal around the edges.  In the end, I felt like it needed more 3-D elements, so I made a handle for the magnifying glass out of a large q-tip and twine.  I found some cutout butterflies in my notecard stash that resembled the butterfly from the collage pack, so I stuck it on with a sponge dot.  Finally, I re-stenciled just the word beauty on the panel.

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 25 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul. I believe—no, I know—you are worthy of love, and I want to teach you to know that about yourself. Join me on this journey of art and inspiration!

I love everything about this–the colors you chose, the texture, the layers. How clever to make a magnifying glass with a butterfly under it & the handle is great. I really enjoyed watching you create this art.
