“Be Brave With Your Life” by CT Member Robyn Barber

An inspirational quote, “Be Brave With Your Life,” was the starting point for this project.

I created a multi-dimensional mixed media piece using 3 hard panels.  On one panel I created a “rubbing” with the Mud Cloth 2 Stencil before adding a layer of gesso using the Carved Numbers Stencil.  A page from the Peaceful Collage Pak was used as the base layer on a second panel.  Distress Ink and water created the base for the third layer.  A pop of color and the quote finished off the project.

I wanted to use the inspiration and “be brave” by using a stencil in a new way – I did a modified “rubbing” technique with mixed media paper, acrylic ink, and the Mud Cloth 2 Stencil.

This paper was then used to cover a hard panel.  I covered a second hard panel with paper from the Peaceful Collage Pack.  I then used the Carved Numbers Stencil in the “traditional” way with gesso to add a layer to both panels.  Additional layers were added to the panels with Posca ink pens and a new favorite medium – water-soluble wax pastels.  A third panel was coated with distress ink.  All of the panels got a “grunge” layer with stamping ink.  An inspirational quote was added to the smallest panel, and the panels were stack unevenly and glued together.  A final coat of fixative was applied to seal the work.

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 25 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul. I believe—no, I know—you are worthy of love, and I want to teach you to know that about yourself. Join me on this journey of art and inspiration!

Love this. I like how the use of the stencil & the black ink turned out. This piece has a nice uniqueness to it.
