Here I created an original mixed media piece of Christmas art using Shawn Petite’s stencils and one of her Collage Paks.

First of all, I added a background color to my canvas. I then built on my background using stencils and adding texture, I used Shawn Petite’s Old World 2 Stencil to add interest and to give a vintage Christmas feel. I drew and cut out a heart shape from old music scores which I then stuck onto my canvas. I added color and texture to the heart by painting with my fingers and then I framed the heart by adding some flowers which have been cut out from collage sheets from Shawn’s Sacred in the Ordinary Collage Pak. I added the poinsettias from Shawn’s Poinsettia and Leaves stencil by using modeling paste to raise them up a little. I then painted the poinsettias and leaves and added highlights and shading to add detail and definition. I then used Shawn’s Holly Jolly Christmas Words stencil to add a focal point to my canvas. I then added a wash to the background to knock it back a little and to allow the foreground to really shine.

I thoroughly enjoyed creating this piece and using Shawn’s products made it fun and easy.

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 25 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul. I believe—no, I know—you are worthy of love, and I want to teach you to know that about yourself. Join me on this journey of art and inspiration!

    Dear Ali,
This artwork is so beautiful. Every layer is built with love! The background was exquisite! Watching your techniques as you added layers, used stencils, painted, created shadows, were such a nice variation to my workflow. The finger painting so so beautiful and free!

I also enjoyed watching your carefree, yet oh so talented way, of applying the paint and details to the flowers. It was so helpful to see the palette as you mixed colors, because it also showed us how much water to use to make the paint flow. I realized that my paint is often too sticky at that stage and am determined to add a bit more water. Thank you!

The music was also so beautiful. I watched your video in the early morning and it was such a nice way to start the day with a positive and peaceful message. I look forward to seeing more of your inspirations.
