Watch me create a mixed media piece using Shawn Petite’s stencils and downloadable collage pack elements.

Firstly I used Shawn Petite’s stencil Face 1 Looking Down stencil to create an outline for my girl’s face. I used a white oil pastel as a base and to give the other pastels something to adhere to. This also makes blending easier! I added a touch of Salmon Pink to the cheeks and lips and then I used my finger to blend the pastels together. Warm fingers are best for this as the natural oil in our fingers help the pastels to blend. I added a hint of red to the lips but leave the base colors to show through to give natural highlights.

Once happy with the face I dabbed raw umber through the stencil to define the brows and lashes. Love how this worked! It really made the face ping! I added ochre and raw umber for the hair. Play with it and have fun… add long strokes and short strokes, highlights and shadows. You just want to give an impression of movement. Next,

I added my ephemera sheets to a 30x40cm canvas. I used old music scores and book pages, anything that has interesting typography or illustrations. I added interest and texture to the background by dabbing paint through Shawn’s Mediterranean 1 stencil and then by using my brayer and my finger to add texture. I cut out flowers, butterflies, and a bird from a few of Shawn’s downloadable collage packs and positioned them to frame my girl’s face.

Once I was happy with the layout I stuck them down and added my words. Use words that have meaning to you or use the same words that I used. I added buff titanium and then raw umber to add shadow and lift the key elements of my design. Lastly, I used a Stabilo 8046 pencil to add definition. I LOVED creating this piece and Shawn Petite’s stencils and beautiful downloadable collage sheets made it so much easier and so much fun!

I really hope that you enjoyed watching my process and that you will have a go at creating your own piece!

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 25 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul. I believe—no, I know—you are worthy of love, and I want to teach you to know that about yourself. Join me on this journey of art and inspiration!
