Here I create a wonderful mixed media piece using Shawn Petite’s stencils and downloadable collage pack elements which I combine with modelling paste and a lovely grungy background.

Firstly I downloaded Shawn’s ‘Hello Beautiful’ collage pak and stuck the pages down with matt medium onto my 40x30cm artboard. I distressed my background by adding raw umber and titanium white with my brayer. I then created another layer with yellow ochre and white. I was careful to leave specific areas of interest from the base layer to show through.

I used Shawn’s ‘Vintage Pattern 4’ stencil to create a patterned background and then used modelling paste with Shawn’s ‘Vintage Pattern 2 and 1’ stencils to create the patterned butterfly wings. I used the ‘Vintage Pattern 4’ stencil combined with the modelling paste to add an ornate frame to the corners of my picture.

Once I had done this I felt that the patterned background looked too strong so I decided to knock it back with a mix of raw umber and white. I felt this gave it a lovely 3D effect.

I then added black to the raised stencilled areas of the butterfly wings and a mix of white and phthalo turquoise to the corners. This helped the areas where I had used modelling paste to stand out. I dripped a watery mix of turquoise down the centre of my picture to draw one’s eye to the centre. I distressed the background further with a watery mix of raw umber and white and that was the background complete.

I added a rich gold haphazardly to the wings and corners to give an aged ornate feel and then chose words that felt complimented my picture. I printed, cut out and stuck down the words with matt medium.

Finally, I used my stabilo pencil to add a bit of definition and then a watery mix of raw umber to help the words and the butterfly to stand out from the background.

I absolutely LOVED creating this piece and am very pleased with the result. I will definitely use Shawn Petite’s stencils and beautiful downloadable collage sheets with modeling paste again! I really hope that you enjoyed watching my process and that you will have a go at creating your own piece!

Enjoy the Video!!

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 25 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul. I believe—no, I know—you are worthy of love, and I want to teach you to know that about yourself. Join me on this journey of art and inspiration!
