Layers of mixed media texture
The layers of texture on this piece are so amazing. I just kept layering texture paste and crackle paint on top of each other!
Using my stencils I created even more hidden layers of texture and pattern.
Acrylic ink was the perfect pairing to show off all of the layers and to let it fall into all the cracks and crevices.
The inspiration behind my art today was yet again my journal time and time of reflection. I also was moved by one of my favorite quotes from Maya Angelou (I have so many from her).
“Do the best you can until you know better, and then when you know better, do better.”
Period. Full stop. No judgment in the quote. Because how do you judge someone when they didn’t know what they didn’t know? How can you judge yourself, when you did the best you could with what you had?
Then, when we learn and we grow, we know…… and we start from there and do the best we can with what we’ve learned. And so on.
I share more about it in the video and how sometimes not knowing all the things when we start something is actually a blessing!

Hi Shawn, love the texture and use of inks in this piece. This quote has special meaning to me, too. Could you list/show the books you’re getting the quotes from (maybe with the supplies under the videos) or in the Resource Library?
Libby,
Yes, I will try to remember to list the books I’ve gotten the quotes from. I have an amazon site that list all my supplies (most of them) and the books that I use most often. This might help.. https://www.amazon.com/shop/shawnpetite
Thanks so much!
How did you get the beautiful quote on tissue paper? Your art is absolutely beautiful!
I use word on my computer to write the quote and then I will tape tissue paper to a piece of copy paper and run it through my printer. I’m pretty sure I have a video on youtube on how to print on tissue.
Thanks for being here! Hugs!
Wonderful piece and wonderful video. Thanks for being brave and keeping it real. So much of my time this past year has been spent make up free, hair in a pony tail, and wearing old t-shirts and it was nice to know I am not alone in this. (Had my first haircut in more than a year was last week – baby steps to normal.) Love all the texture, the muted colors, and the grey/blue soft pastel? Oh my, it had me running to my table to see if I had it. Also, Maya Angelou is a favorite of mine. So this week’s Sunday video was a hit for me all the way around, in every way. Thanks for sharing. And have a great week.
Marguerite,
This last year has been so weird, and I’ve spent most of it like you without a stitch of makeup on! Thanks so much for being here and for sharing the creative journey with me!
Shawn
I have been enjoying your wonderful videos for 3/4 yrs now.

If your trying to get to your purchased collage packs they will be in your shop account. Please let me know if you have questions I can email you more details. Thanks!
Shawn, what is the name of the font you use for this magnificent script? I have searched, but cannot find anything like it.
It’s called Bohemia. I think I purchase if from creative market.
