Over the next few months, I’ve committed to exploring texture in a fun and playful way by building a dedicated texture journal full of ideas and inspiration. One of my lovely students suggested it, and I thought… what a fabulous idea!
I have journals for just about everything, but somehow I didn’t have one just for texture. So I decided to go for it!
In today’s video (the second in this series), I’m sharing 3 simple but yummy techniques for creating texture in your mixed media projects. The best part? You probably already have the supplies at home. I’ll also walk you through how I make my own texture collage sheets to use in the journal and chat a bit about why I love creating this way.
💡And then, while I was creating the journal page to show you an example of the textures we made, something unexpected happened.
The page took on a life of its own and turned into a deeply personal message — one of those intuitive, heart-led pieces that arrives when we finally stop thinking and simply let ourselves be.
You see…..I’ve been doing a lot of soul work lately — in my art, in my business, and just in the quiet spaces of my everyday life. Really asking myself how I want to show up and what feels true for me.
As I layered and smudged and moved pieces around, this gentle but powerful message kept coming through: stop trying to smooth all the edges… stop trying to be perfect. And then the final words settled in — “Stop playing small.”
It hit me right in the heart. I had a few tears, a deep breath, and this beautiful reminder that I needed in that moment.
And maybe… just maybe you need it today too. You are already so much more than you give yourself credit for.
This is why creating matters — whatever it is that you create. It gives us a place to feel, to remember, to come home to ourselves. It offers us a safe place to land.
I hope you enjoy watching and experimenting alongside me. But more than anything, I hope you meet yourself in the process.
Have fun watching…and always, always know that you are loved!
