Brave choices in my journal

Sometimes creativity is an act of bravery. Well, actually, EVERY time we create, it’s an act of bravery.

It doesn’t matter what we’re creating. It can be paint swatches on a scrap of paper, a few scratchy marks in a journal, or a finished piece hanging on the wall. Every time we create, we make ourselves a little vulnerable. We show up without knowing exactly what will happen, and that takes courage.

Creating is one of those beautiful things that helps us find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.

That’s what happened this week when I opened my Molly journal to play.

A couple of weeks ago, I created some beautiful leaf patterns with you and tucked them away, saving them for something special. As I sat at my table, I realized something important: every day I get to create is special. So instead of waiting for the perfect project, I decided to use them.

As I worked, I felt like I was making brave choices.

I didn’t know where the page was going. I wasn’t sure if the background papers would work with the leaves. I didn’t have a plan for the finished piece. But I kept going anyway.

Each step felt both small and significant at the same time.

I trusted my instincts. I followed my curiosity. I created with my heart.

And that is incredibly brave.

I think we often imagine bravery as something loud and dramatic, but most of the time it isn’t. Most bravery happens quietly. It’s choosing to begin when you’re unsure. It’s making imperfect marks. It’s showing up for yourself when no one else is watching.

One small act of bravery almost always leads to another.

So today, I want to encourage you to let go of perfection. Be brave enough to make one mark, paint one page, or try one thing that feels a little uncertain.

Create one small thing today.

You might be surprised where that tiny act of courage leads.

Enjoy the process today and always know that you are loved!

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 30 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul.
