I felt like playing today.
I was cleaning up my desk after creating lots of projects for the membership when I noticed my scrap bucket of collage papers was overflowing. Little bits and pieces from past projects, experiments, and creative days were all piled together.
And I thought… why not use them?
So that became the plan—or really, the non-plan.
I wanted to see how many of those scraps I could use and simply do the next right thing as I created this journal page. No overthinking. No trying to figure out where it was going. Just pick something up, put it down, and see what happened next.
There’s a little bit of fear in creating that way, especially when you’re filming the whole thing for everyone to see! But maybe that was exactly what I needed.
I was also inspired by another wonderful quote from Meera Lee Patel:
“You can’t BE BRAVE unless you’re afraid.”
In her book My Friend Fear, Meera talks about how we all walk around carrying some kind of fear. Fear of change. Fear of loss. Fear of the unknown. Fear about our health or the people we love. Fear of what comes next.
We can all fill in that blank with something.
It reminded me of one of my favorite thoughts: We can be both brave and afraid at the same time.
I share more about this in the video, but today I decided to practice a little bravery of my own. I let go of the outcome of this page and simply followed where the process wanted to take me.
And you know what? You might look at the finished page and think it’s a mess. You might think something doesn’t work or that I should have stopped three layers ago. Ha!
But I love it.
Not because it’s perfect, but because of the journey it took me on. I love the emotional lessons it gave me and the practical creative lessons I learned along the way.
Sometimes the gift isn’t the finished piece.
Sometimes the gift is what happens to us while we’re creating it.
So I hope you’ll come along on this little journey with me. Grab some scraps, let go of the plan, be a little brave… and let’s play.
Enjoy the process, and always know that you are loved.
