Hi and welcome to my creative team post!! I’m excited to share how I turned another old canvas into a piece of art.
I started this canvas a while ago but got stuck so didn’t finish but I’m glad I revisited this piece, cause I loved how it has turned out. The original layer was made up of tissue paper, a wash of orange paint, a large mandala doodle in the top left corner and painted flowers and leaves on the other corner. I wanted to keep the flowers but not the doodle so I covered the doodle with chalk primer and the flowers with clear chalk primer.
Once the canvas was primed and dried I collaged over most of the canvas (including the flowers, oops). I applied paper from an old A-Z map book along with gold, teal & purple tissue paper, using PVA glue..
Then I applied some chalk primer and orange paint with my fingers to blend in the edges of the papers to create a more cohesive background. After that was dry I pulled out a couple stencils and dabbed teal paint through a zig-zag design with my fingers in a few areas and added the paint around the canvas. I finished off the background by spraying purple ink over a mask and coloured the edge of the canvas by swiping a mixture of ink and white paint.
The background reminded me of water so I stenciled on three dragonflies as well as the quote “you were always meant to fly” using a makeup sponge and black paint. To finish it off I added black, gold and white splashes, outlined the quote, dragonflies and doodled in the details of the wings with my white gel pen. I also added clusters of white, black and gold doodled crosses.
I’m in love with this canvas! The colours, textures, tiny details and the gold! Love, love, love! I may have to keep this one too.
I hope you enjoy the video and find inspiration from it. I can’t wait to share my future creations with you, until next time.

Fun fact:
I am a self taught artist. I call my paintings “she” if there’s a girl on it. I love the feel and smell of books especially old ones. When I decided I wanted to be an artist I had no idea how to draw and where to start, so my mum introduced me to mixed media.
My favourite quote –
“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is youer than you!” – Dr. Seuss.
