Simplify textured journal page with texture paste, gesso and stenciling 8-15-21

Oh, the texture and grungy goodness on this journal page! It’s simple and yet so rich.

A little texture paste and gesso can make such a layered impact on your page.

My goal was to only use just a few things and simplify my process, to not overthink anything and just relax with my journal.  — Mission accomplished.

I needed some space in my brain… with so many things to do on my “to do” list, and so many decisions to make… I was feeling overwhelmed.

When this happens for me, I can always hear my therapist’s voice…” Shawn simplify things” just take one thing at a time.  It seems logical, and so simple and yet when we’re in the middle of all the things… it can be hard to see clearly.

So I went to my journal and wrote out one thing to do. … that’s it and when I got that done, I wrote another thing.   One step at a time.

As soon as I simplified…. things got a little easier to see….

I share more about it in the video. Have fun watching!

Hello there! I’m Shawn Petite

I’ve been teaching and creating for well over 25 years. About 15 years ago I found my art soul mate in mixed media, and it changed my life! I love the story that can be told by combining paint, texture, ink, paper and—really anything that you can imagine.

But what I’m truly passionate about is being your guide, walking with you step by step and helping you become your own hero in your creative journey.

Along my path, I’ve learned that the creating art also creates a healing space. Life can be messy and complicated and painful, but something about a paint brush can help heal your soul. I believe—no, I know—you are worthy of love, and I want to teach you to know that about yourself. Join me on this journey of art and inspiration!

I love the font you used for the word “simplify”on tissue paper. I’ve seen it in some of your other work as well, but I don’t see it on any of the collage sheets that you sell. Where can I get the same script? Is it a font on your computer? How do you produce it on tissue paper? Thank you!

Esis, welcome to the 5 club… I’m a 5 too and move to a 1 under stress. I love being able to learn more about myself and how I show up in the world and most importantly how I can grow. You’ll love Brandon’s emails as he prompts you in some journaling questions! So glad you are here. Hugs!!

Hi Shawn! I’m so bummed for you about your flood. Hang in there, this Too shall pass. I think. I hope. I bet. I’m sure? At any rate, I too have a question about printing on tissue paper—you don’t have the tissue paper listed on your supply list—is it just gift wrap you have cut to 8×11 and fed into printer or are there printer sheets you buy? Thanks so much and sorry to bother during this stressful time xox

      Hi Cynthia,
      Thanks for the encouraging words!
Yes, its just gift tissue that I get from the dollar store or Amazon and cut it to an 8×10 size and tape it onto a piece of copy paper. then I feed that through the printer.
